Description

Traditional bodhi seed mala: the pipal seed, worn smooth against the hands of practitioners across centuries, carries something that polished gemstone does not. It is a material that asks to be held.

The Bodhi tree, Ficus religiosa, the sacred fig of South Asia, is the tree under which Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya in present-day Bihar, India. Its seeds have been used in mala beads across the Buddhist world since that tradition formed: in Tibetan monasteries, in Nepali temples, in Theravada practice across Southeast Asia. The pipal seed is a natural material, variable in color from pale tan to warm brown, and it accepts the oils of daily use, darkening and polishing over years of handling into an object quietly unlike any other. No two malas age identically.

This mala is strung on 108 beads, the traditional count for a complete circuit of recitation in Buddhist and Hindu practice. Each bodhi seed measures approximately 8 millimeters in diameter, lightly textured on the surface with the natural grain of the seed coat. The cord is hand-knotted between each bead, a construction that allows individual replacement and prevents the beads from colliding during use. A guru bead marks the completion point, tied in the traditional manner. Total length, fully extended, is approximately 90 centimeters.
