Red sandalwood, known in Chinese as zi tan, is one of the most prized materials in the devotional traditions of South and East Asia. Unlike white sandalwood, valued primarily for its fragrance, red sandalwood is prized for its material qualities: exceptional density, a deep burgundy-brown color that darkens with age and handling, and a dry, earthy warmth distinct from other sacred woods. Slow-growing and increasingly rare, it has been used in Buddhist mala beads, altar pieces, and devotional carvings for centuries across China, Tibet, Japan, and the Indian subcontinent.

This mala consists of 108 beads cut and rounded from natural red sandalwood, strung on a durable cord and finished with a tassel. The beads are hand-smoothed; the wood’s color varies naturally between pieces, with deeper burgundy tones appearing in older, denser sections of the tree. No dye or chemical treatment is applied.
