Description

The sodalite stone mala necklace carries a color that stops the eye. Each bead holds the deep royal blue of the mineral, shot through with white veining, cool against the skin and consistent in tone across all 108 beads.

Sodalite is a silicate mineral with primary deposits in Brazil, Canada, and Namibia, with significant quantities also found in Myanmar. In Asian lapidary tradition, it has been used in bead-making since the nineteenth century, often selected as an accessible substitute for lapis lazuli, sharing its depth of blue tone. The mala format, 108 beads strung on a single cord, is a counting tool originating in Hindu and Buddhist practice, tracing its structure to the Vedic period in India and adopted across Asia over two millennia.

The mala is strung on durable elastic cord with 108 polished sodalite beads, each approximately 8mm in diameter, giving the necklace a total circumference of approximately 90cm and a weight of roughly 100 grams. Each bead is individually tumble-polished to a smooth, rounded finish that reveals the mineral’s characteristic cobalt and navy tones against white mineral inclusions. The graduating intensity of the blue across individual beads is a natural property of the stone, not a treatment. A simple knotted tassel anchors the strand at the pendant position.

Material: natural sodalite (sodium aluminium silicate). Bead diameter: approximately 8mm. Bead count: 108. Necklace circumference: approximately 90cm. Total weight: approximately 100 grams. Finish: individually tumble-polished to a smooth round. Color: deep cobalt and navy with natural white mineral veining. Not dyed or treated. Origin: China.

The blue is the stone’s own. No treatment, no enhancement. Artisan d’Asie selects each strand for color depth and bead consistency.
