Description

The premium brown sandalwood mala necklace is warm in the hand from the first handling and carries a fragrance that deepens rather than fades with wear. Each of the 108 beads is smooth, round, and consistent in size, the result of careful wood selection and extended hand-polishing in workshops in China’s Shaanxi and Yunnan provinces.

This mala contains 108 beads, the canonical count for Buddhist and Taoist practice, each measuring approximately 8 millimetres in diameter. The strand is knotted between every bead using waxed thread, allowing individual beads to seat separately without friction. The guru bead and tassel are proportional to the strand, with the tassel in a tone drawn from the wood’s own natural range. Total strand length when extended is approximately 40 centimetres; weight is approximately 60 grams.

Use this mala as a counting tool in seated meditation or mantra practice, passing beads through the fingers one by one with each repetition. The knots between beads prevent slipping and allow deliberate pacing. The wood warms quickly to skin temperature, making it comfortable for extended sessions. It can also be worn as a necklace throughout the day, allowing the fragrance to develop with body heat over time.

Brown sandalwood from China’s Shaanxi and Yunnan provinces is distinct from the pale Mysore variety more commonly seen in Western markets: denser in grain, deeper in fragrance, and slower to fade with use. Sandalwood has been used in Buddhist practice for over two thousand years, valued as a material that aids focus and clarity in contemplative states. Chinese craftsmen producing mala beads from sandalwood have followed hand-drill and polishing methods that prioritize preserving the wood’s natural oil content, allowing fragrance to develop through contact and warmth rather than fading from the outside in.

How long does the fragrance of sandalwood beads last? Chinese brown sandalwood at 8 mm bead size retains its natural fragrance for several years under daily wear conditions, as body heat and handling continue to release oils from the wood’s interior. The scent is subtler than a fresh-cut piece but persistent; to refresh it, warm the beads briefly in the palms or apply a small amount of sandalwood essential oil to the guru bead only.
