Description

The scent of red sandalwood is earthy and faintly resinous, rising in a quiet thread each time a bead passes between the fingers.

Red sandalwood, known as Rakta Chandan in Sanskrit, has held a central place in Hindu and Buddhist devotional practice for more than a thousand years. Grown in the dry deciduous forests of South India, particularly in Andhra Pradesh, the wood is slow to mature and grows exceptionally dense, which accounts for both its weight and its enduring fragrance. It appears throughout Vedic tradition in temple offerings, ritual paste applied to sacred images, and in the making of prayer beads used for daily mantra recitation across the Indian subcontinent.

This mala is composed of 108 red sandalwood beads, each chosen for consistent grain and a smooth, even surface. The beads carry a quiet warmth in the hand and release their characteristic scent gradually with use. They are strung on durable cord and finished with a traditional guru bead at the head of the strand, marking the start and close of each full round.

The mala holds 108 counting beads plus one guru bead, following the standard count used in Buddhist and Hindu mantra recitation. Specific bead diameter and total strand length are not listed in the product details. Country of origin: India.

Red sandalwood ages well with regular handling, the surface developing a subtle patina and the fragrance mellowing gradually over time. This mala is suited to daily seated practice and can be worn throughout the day.
