Volcanic lava stone has been used as a material in craft and ornamentation across many cultures, from Polynesia to Mesoamerica, where volcanic rock was both practically abundant and symbolically significant. In various spiritual traditions, lava stone is associated with strength, stability, and grounding, its origin in the earth’s interior lending it a symbolic weight that polished or sedimentary stones do not carry. The mala bracelet form originates in Hindu and Buddhist practice as a tool for counting repeated prayer or mantra.
This bracelet is strung from beads of natural volcanic lava stone, recognizable by its rough, porous surface formed when molten rock cooled and gas escaped during solidification. The porosity is functional as well as decorative: a drop of essential oil applied to one or two beads is absorbed into the stone and released gradually over several hours, making the bracelet usable as a personal diffuser. Beads are strung on durable elastic cord.
