Description

The premium rosewood mala bracelet is a wrist-worn counting piece made from Dalbergia odorifera heartwood, a timber prized since the Ming dynasty for its exceptional density and its characteristic scent of pear. Twenty-one beads in the traditional mala count, anchored by a guru bead and silk tassel, sit against the wrist with a warmth the material carries from the moment it leaves its storage.

Each bead is turned on a lathe from a single piece of Dalbergia odorifera heartwood, then hand-sanded through progressive grits to a satin finish that retains the grain’s visual depth. Bead diameter is 8 mm, with a slightly larger guru bead marking the count anchor. The bracelet is strung on braided high-stretch silicone cord rated for daily use, sized to fit wrists from 15 to 19 cm. Total weight is consistent with the density of true rosewood heartwood. A silk tassel completes the guru bead end. The pear-like fragrance of the wood is present from the first wear and does not fade, because it originates within the grain itself rather than in any surface treatment.

Wear the bracelet on the left or right wrist according to personal preference. In traditional mala practice, use the thumb and forefinger to move one bead per mantra repetition. The elastic cord allows the bracelet to slide on and off in a single motion. It is built for daily contact: the oil from handling deepens the color of the wood over months of wear.

Dalbergia odorifera, known in China as jiāngxiāng huálí or fragrant rosewood, has been worked in the workshops of Guangdong and Fujian for more than five centuries. Ming dynasty craftsmen selected only the heartwood, discarding the paler sapwood that lacks both fragrance and structural integrity. Today Dalbergia odorifera is increasingly regulated due to habitat loss, and each piece is accompanied by a material certificate confirming legal origin.

Is rosewood a sustainable material to buy? Dalbergia odorifera is listed under CITES Appendix II, and trade requires documentation at the point of export. This bracelet comes with a material certificate. Each piece is made from legally sourced heartwood from managed stock, not wild harvest.
