Description
The Premium Red Sandalwood Mala Bracelet is a 108-bead mala bracelet hand-strung from solid Zi Tan red sandalwood, one of the most prized tonewoods in Chinese craft tradition, with no dye or lacquer applied. Each bead is 8 mm in diameter, individually knotted on an elastic cord, and the finished bracelet weighs approximately 15 to 20 grams.
The beads are turned from solid Zi Tan (purple sandalwood) heartwood, revealing a deep reddish-brown grain that varies naturally across each bead. The surface is left in its natural state without lacquer or oil treatment, so the wood’s own oils provide the only finish — a faint earthy fragrance and a matte texture that develops a gentle patina with regular skin contact. A traditional knot is tied between each of the 108 beads, preventing movement and allowing individual bead counting during recitation or breath practice.
Wear on the wrist as a bracelet or hold in the hand during mantra recitation, moving one bead per repetition across the 108-count cycle. The elastic cord closure makes it easy to put on and take off without clasps. The bracelet suits either wrist and fits most adult wrist sizes. For mala counting practice, begin at the guru bead if designated, or at any fixed starting point.
Zi Tan red sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus) has been used in Chinese furniture-making, musical instruments, and Buddhist ritual objects for centuries, prized for its density, fine grain, and natural preservative oils. The 108-bead count is standard across Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhist mala traditions, corresponding to 108 afflictions in Buddhist cosmology and enabling complete recitation cycles of mantras such as Om Mani Padme Hum. The use of natural uncoated wood honors a craft tradition in which the material itself is considered part of the object’s spiritual character.
Will the elastic cord break with regular wear? The elastic is a high-tension cord rated for sustained stretch, and the individual knots between each bead distribute stress rather than concentrating it at a single point, extending the cord’s working life significantly. With daily wear the cord typically remains functional for one to three years before any elasticity loss becomes noticeable; re-stringing by a bead worker is straightforward if needed.
