Lapis lazuli has been quarried in the mountains of Badakhshan, Afghanistan, for more than six thousand years. It traveled the ancient trade routes into Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Mediterranean, where it was ground for pigment, shaped into amulets, and inlaid into funerary objects. Its association with clarity of perception and truthful communication appears in multiple contemplative traditions and has persisted across centuries of recorded use.
Each bead is shaped from natural lapis lazuli, a metamorphic rock composed primarily of lazurite, with characteristic flecks of golden pyrite and white calcite running through the deep blue matrix. Variation between beads is inherent to the stone; no two are identical. Beads are strung on durable cord in the traditional mala configuration, with a guru bead at the count’s starting point.
