Description
The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival lantern is a handcrafted paper and bamboo lantern made to mark the lunar harvest celebration observed across China and much of East Asia for over a thousand years. Built around a hand-bent bamboo frame dressed in layered rice paper, it carries painted traditional motifs and diffuses warm light evenly through its panels. It is appropriate as a decorative piece, a gift, or a functional lantern compatible with candle or LED light sources.
This lantern is constructed around a hand-bent bamboo frame dressed in layered rice paper that diffuses candlelight into a warm, even glow. The exterior panels carry traditional painted motifs: moon rabbits, osmanthus blossoms, and cloud scrollwork drawn from classical Chinese textile and ceramic design. A central hanging wire supports the structure for suspension or hand-carrying. Height is approximately 22 cm, diameter 14 cm. The paper is treated for light durability and holds its color across multiple seasons of careful use. The bamboo frame maintains its structure with ordinary handling.
The lantern is hung from a hook or carried by the central wire during the festival. It accepts a small tea light candle placed on the base of the interior, or an LED candle for a flameless alternative suitable for use around children. The rice paper panels are not waterproof and the lantern is intended for indoor use or sheltered outdoor settings. Between seasons, store flat or in a box to preserve the paper panels.
The Mid-Autumn Festival has been observed in China for over a thousand years, tied to the lunar harvest cycle and the mythology of Chang’e, the moon goddess. Paper lanterns became the defining object of the festival during the Tang dynasty, carried through village streets and floated on rivers as expressions of goodwill and family unity. The craft endures in workshops in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, where artisans fold, cut, and wire bamboo frames using techniques passed through family lines. The moon rabbit motif references the legend of the Jade Rabbit, Chang’e’s companion on the moon.
A common buyer question: is this lantern safe to use with a real candle? Yes, with appropriate care. Place a small tea light in the base of the interior on a non-flammable surface, keep the lantern upright during use, and do not leave it unattended while lit. An LED tea light is a safe alternative that produces a similar warm diffused glow through the rice paper panels without open flame.
