Description
Green yin yang cloisonné Baoding balls are a pair of Qi Gong hand exercise balls made from a copper base with hand-applied cloisonné enamel in green, each bearing a yin yang motif worked into the enamel surface. Each ball measures 40mm in diameter, and the pair weighs approximately 250 grams combined. A padded wooden gift box is included, which protects the balls during storage and makes the set presentation-ready without additional packaging.
The copper base is formed first, then fine copper wire is used to outline the yin yang design and the surrounding pattern cells. Green mineral enamel is applied in two to three passes, buffed between firings to maintain an even surface, and polished after the final firing. The internal chime mechanism produces a clear tone when the balls roll against each other, a feature that provides auditory feedback during the rotation exercise and is characteristic of Baoding balls produced in the traditional style.
The exercise involves holding both balls in one palm and rotating them in a continuous circle, keeping them in contact without gripping them tightly. Regular practice engages the fine motor muscles of the hand and fingers and stimulates the acupressure points of the palm identified in Chinese medical theory. The 40mm diameter is well suited to average adult hand sizes and allows smooth rotation without excessive force.
Baoding balls take their name from Baoding city in Hebei province, where the production of health balls became an established local industry during the Ming dynasty. The Ming court patronized Baoding workshops, and the balls were given as tribute gifts to the imperial household. The application of cloisonné enamel to Baoding balls draws on the parallel imperial craft tradition centered in Beijing, where cloisonné technique was developed and refined during the Yuan and Ming dynasties. The combination of these two traditions in a single object reflects the geographic proximity of Beijing and Baoding and the shared craft culture of the Hebei region.
These balls are suited to anyone beginning or continuing a hand exercise practice who also wants a visually considered object. The green enamel and yin yang motif give the balls a character that distinguishes them from plain chrome or undecorated alternatives. The padded wooden box makes them practical to store and easy to give as a gift for someone with an interest in Chinese wellness practice or decorative craft.
