Description

Dragon motif steel gong balls settle into the palm with the quiet authority of worked metal. Each sphere is polished to a mirror finish, the engraved dragon winding around the surface in a single continuous line, cut by hand in the workshops of Baoding.

Qi Gong health balls, known in China as Baoding balls for the city in Hebei province where they have been produced since the Ming dynasty, are used throughout East Asia as a daily practice tool for dexterity and focused attention. The dragon motif carries deep lineage in Chinese metalwork: a symbol of strength, transformation, and auspicious fortune, rendered here by craftsmen who engrave each sphere by hand rather than by stamp or press. Texts from the fourteenth century document the practice of rotating two spheres in the palm as a method of sustaining precision in the hands.

Each ball measures 45 mm in diameter and weighs approximately 175 grams, a weight calibrated for sustained use without fatigue in the hand. The surface is mirror-polished surgical-grade steel, with engraving cut to a depth of 0.5 mm so the relief remains tactile beneath the fingers as the spheres rotate. The set includes two balls presented in a silk-lined lacquer box with a bilingual practice guide. The chime tone is produced by an interior resonator tuned by the manufacturer before shipment, producing a clear note that shifts in pitch as the ball turns.

Qi Gong health balls, set of two. Steel, mirror-polished. Hand-engraved dragon motif. Diameter: 45 mm. Weight: 175 g each. Interior chime resonator. Silk-lined lacquer presentation box. Bilingual practice guide. Origin: Baoding, Hebei, China.

A Ming dynasty practice tool, still made by the same hand. Two balls, one continuous movement. The weight does the work.
