Artisan oud wood Qi Gong spheres are held together in one palm and rotated. The grain is visible, the scent faint and resinous, the surface polished smooth. Two spheres, one hand, a practice with a history.
Qi Gong hand spheres, known in China as Baoding balls, trace their use to Ming dynasty workshops in Hebei province, where iron and stone versions were produced for martial and health traditions. Oud wood, from the Aquilaria tree family of Southeast and South Asia, entered the sphere tradition as a premium material prized for density, grain pattern, and the resinous fragrance released under friction. The combination unites two distinct Asian material traditions in a single refined object.
Each sphere measures approximately 4 cm in diameter, sized to fit comfortably in an adult hand when rotating two at a time. The oud wood is turned on a lathe, then hand-sanded through progressive grits to a smooth, sealed surface that retains the grain. Weight per pair is approximately 100 to 130 grams. The spheres do not produce the chime tone of hollow metal Baoding balls; the sound is a quiet wooden knock on contact. Sold as a pair. Natural variation in grain and color between pairs is inherent to the material.
