Description

Lushan Mountain green jade Qi Gong balls arrive as a matched pair of smooth spheres that settle into the palm with immediate weight and a satin coolness particular to genuine stone. Sourced from the Lushan region of Jiangxi Province, central China, this pair is sized for active palm rotation practice and presented in a fitted brocade box.

Each ball measures approximately 45 millimetres in diameter and weighs between 120 and 140 grams, substantial enough to require active engagement from the palm and fingers during rotation. The surface is hand-polished to a satin finish, cool on contact, with the slight waxiness characteristic of genuine nephrite or serpentine jade. No lacquer or coating is applied. Stone inclusions vary, meaning no two sets are identical in pattern or precise color tone across the muted mineral green range.

To practice, hold both balls in one palm and rotate them in a continuous circle without allowing them to touch each other. Begin slowly, building rhythm over several minutes. The practice develops fine motor coordination, hand circulation, and grip endurance over time. Alternate hands as needed. The balls can also be placed on a desk as a tactile object or displayed in the brocade box as a decorative piece.

Lushan, rising above Jiangxi Province, has been a site of contemplative practice and scholarly retreat since the Eastern Jin dynasty. Qi Gong balls, known in Chinese as jian shen qiu, have been documented since the Ming dynasty: practitioners rotate two spheres in one hand, a discipline recorded in court archives as both a martial conditioning exercise and a method of maintaining hand dexterity through age. Jiangxi stonecutters have polished matched pairs for generations, selecting stone for density and tactile depth rather than brilliance.

Are jade Qi Gong balls better than metal or steel ones? Jade balls offer a different sensory profile from metal: they are warmer in extended use, quieter in contact (no chime), and maintain a consistently satin surface texture that many practitioners prefer. Their weight falls between light wooden balls and heavier steel chiming balls, making them suitable for beginners and intermediate practitioners. The natural stone surface also provides a distinct tactile feedback during rotation that metal or lacquered balls do not replicate.
