Description

Purple Sandalwood Qi Gong Health Balls are a pair of hand-turned zitan (purple sandalwood) spheres used for palm rotation exercises that stimulate hand circulation, maintain finger joint mobility, and support the focused manual practice central to traditional Chinese health cultivation. Available in sizes from approximately 3.5 cm to 5 cm diameter, each pair is supplied in a fitted box or pochette.

Zitan is one of the densest hardwoods used in Chinese craft — dense enough to sink in water — and the spheres are hand-turned without coating or lacquer, leaving the wood’s own deep-grain oils as the sole surface treatment. The color ranges from deep plum to near-black depending on the angle of light and the grain of each individual piece. No two pairs are identical in grain pattern. The surface develops a natural polish with use as the hand’s oils work into the wood.

Hold both spheres in one palm and rotate them slowly in a circle without letting them touch, then reverse direction. The absence of internal chimes makes these balls suitable for use in quiet environments — libraries, offices, or during focused reading — where the chimed steel or cloisonné varieties would be intrusive. Begin with the smaller available diameter if hand strength is limited and progress to larger sizes over weeks of practice.

Zitan (Pterocarpus santalinus and related species) has been among the most prized woods in Chinese imperial furniture and decorative objects since at least the Tang Dynasty. Its extraordinary density, fine grain, and natural luster made it the material of choice for scholar’s objects, writing implements, and meditation tools. The tradition of wooden health balls predates the metal Baoding variety and is associated with scholar culture in which manual practice and mental clarity were considered complementary.

Do the wooden balls make any sound during use? Unlike steel or cloisonné Baoding balls, zitan health balls produce only a soft, low wooden click if they briefly contact each other — no chime mechanism is present. This makes them the preferred choice for quiet practice settings and for users who find the chime of metal balls distracting during concentration-based exercises.
