Purple sandalwood, known in Chinese as zitan, is among the most prized hardwoods in East Asian craft tradition. Indigenous to subtropical zones of South and Southeast Asia, it has been imported into China for centuries, used in imperial workshops for scholar’s objects, furniture, and ritual items. Its extreme density, which causes the wood to sink in water, and its slow, even grain made it the material of choice for objects requiring both precision and permanence. These balls are hand-turned and finished without coating.

Each ball measures approximately 3.5 to 4 cm in diameter. The weight is notable: zitan’s density exceeds most other hardwoods by a significant margin, giving these spheres a heft that is immediately apparent on first handling. The surface is polished to a smooth, near-waxy finish that reveals the wood’s tight grain and natural color variation, from deep plum to near-black. No lacquer or coating is applied. The wood’s own oils provide the surface. Pairs are presented in a fitted box.
