Jade agate gong balls arrive as a pair, each sphere polished to a finish that picks up ambient light from any angle. They rest in the palm with a weight that is immediately distinct from any synthetic substitute.
Baoding health spheres originate in Baoding city, Hebei province, during the Ming dynasty. Court records from the Jiajing reign reference iron spheres used by officials for hand exercise, and by the Qing dynasty the practice had spread to civilian households, with spheres produced in jade, agate, and carved stone. Jade, classified as nephrite or jadeite, has been carved for ceremonial objects in China for over seven thousand years. Agate appears in Chinese ornamental work from at least the Han dynasty, prized for its banding and hardness.
Each sphere in this set is hand-turned from natural stone, either nephrite jade or banded agate depending on the pair selected, and polished to a high finish without surface coating or synthetic treatment. Diameter measures approximately 40mm per sphere, within the standard range for adult hand exercise. Weight per sphere ranges from approximately 90 to 110 grams depending on stone density. The set is supplied in a fitted wooden presentation box lined with velvet. No two pairs are identical in grain pattern or banding.
