Description

A copper cylinder turns on its handle, each clockwise rotation completing a circuit that Tibetan Buddhist teachers prescribed and refined across more than a millennium of practice.

The prayer wheel belongs to the tantric Buddhist tradition that took root in Tibet between the eighth and twelfth centuries. Teachers of that period developed ritual objects designed to make the accumulation of merit accessible outside formal seated meditation — the prayer wheel extends mantra recitation into physical movement, allowing practitioners to generate meritorious action while walking, working, or resting. The device reflects a practical theology: merit accrues through the activation of the written mantra, not only through silent recitation in a fixed posture.

This wheel is constructed from hand-beaten copper, a material central to Tibetan ritual metalwork for its workability and warm, matte finish. The cylinder is sealed at both ends and fitted onto a turned wooden handle designed for a comfortable one-handed grip. Inside, mantras are rolled in the traditional format — densely printed on paper, wound tightly, and placed so that each full rotation of the wheel sends them outward in the prescribed direction.

A single prayer wheel, complete with handle and sealed mantra roll. Made by hand in Tibet. Dimensions are available on request. Country of origin: China (Tibet Autonomous Region).

The wheel is operated by rotating it clockwise with a steady wrist motion, typically while walking or during informal periods of practice. No components require replacement under ordinary use.
