Description

Tibetan copper prayer wheel: a cylinder of hand-beaten copper, sealed at both ends, mounted on a handle, filled with mantras rolled in the traditional format. Each clockwise rotation sends those mantras outward in the manner prescribed by the Buddhist teachers who developed this object form in Tibet between the eighth and twelfth centuries.\n\nThe prayer wheel belongs to a category of Tibetan ritual objects that operate through physical engagement rather than intellectual contemplation. The mantras inside — typically the Om Mani Padme Hum in its full repetitions — are present whether or not the person rotating the wheel can recite them. This is the logic of the object: the hand does the work. The craft tradition that produces these wheels is concentrated in workshop lineages in Lhasa and the surrounding region, where the forming, engraving, and assembly are divided between specialists.\n\nThis wheel is formed from copper with metal alloy detailing at the cylinder band. The engraving on the surface is hand-applied using a punch tool against the cold metal, not acid-etched. The handle is turned from hardwood with a copper ferrule at the join. The cylinder spins freely on its axle with the resistance appropriate for continuous rotation. Total height approximately 14cm. Weight sufficient to maintain momentum through the wrist rotation that drives it.\n\nTibetan prayer wheel, handcrafted. Materials: copper and metal alloy cylinder, hardwood handle. Surface: hand-engraved. Mechanism: free-spinning axle. Approximate height: 14cm. Origin: Lhasa region, Tibet. Contains rolled mantras in traditional format.\n\nMade to be used daily. The engraving deepens with handling. A working object from a working tradition.
