Description

The Orange and White Agate Mala Necklace is a 108-bead individually knotted mala strung with natural orange and white agate from Jaipur gem workshops in India, finished with a tassel at the guru bead. At approximately 84 cm total length, it is worn as a full-length mala necklace or doubled for wrist wear.

The beads are natural agate measuring 8 to 10 mm in diameter, displaying the characteristic banded or mottled pattern of agate in warm orange tones contrasted with white and cream. Each of the 108 beads is individually knotted on the cord — a traditional construction method that prevents bead loss if the cord breaks and allows clear tactile separation between beads during recitation. The tassel at the guru bead is a traditional mala finishing element. The necklace is long enough to wear over the head without a clasp.

Wear as a 84 cm single-strand necklace over clothing or close to the skin, or double it around the wrist for use as a bracelet. For mantra counting, hold the mala in the right hand and move one bead per recitation between thumb and middle finger, working toward the guru bead without crossing it — at the guru bead, reverse direction to begin the next cycle. Agate is a relatively hard stone (Mohs 6.5 to 7) and withstands daily wear well; keep away from ultrasonic cleaners.

Agate has been worked in Jaipur, Rajasthan, since at least the Mughal period, and the city remains one of the world’s principal centers for gemstone cutting, polishing, and mala assembly. The 108-bead mala is the standard ritual counting string across Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions, with 108 representing a number of cosmic and doctrinal significance in each lineage. Orange agate — with its warm, fire-toned banding — is associated in Indian gem tradition with vitality and grounded focus.

Can this mala be worn daily, or is it too fragile for continuous use? The individually knotted construction is specifically designed for durability under daily wear: each knot acts as a buffer against bead-to-bead friction and means that even if a single knot loosens, the entire strand does not unravel. The agate itself is hard enough to resist surface scratching from normal contact. With daily use, the silk or cotton cord will show wear over one to two years, at which point a bead worker can restring the beads onto fresh cord.
