Jade has been central to Chinese material culture for at least seven thousand years, valued above gold and silk in classical thought as a marker of virtue, moral character, and connection to celestial forces. The Chinese zodiac, a twelve-year cycle in which each year is governed by a different animal, has structured the traditional calendar and individual identity since at least the Han Dynasty.
