Description
A black obsidian stone mala bracelet, its surface smooth and almost liquid under light. Volcanic in origin, each bead carries the compressed memory of ancient geological pressure: cool, opaque, immediate against the skin.
Obsidian forms where silica-rich lava cools too rapidly for crystals to develop, producing a natural glass with a conchoidal fracture pattern used by cultures across five continents for blades, mirrors, and ritual objects. Deposits used in contemporary mala-making come mainly from volcanic zones in China, Mexico, and the Pacific Northwest. In Tibetan and Himalayan practice, dark stones have held a place in protective amulet traditions for centuries. The mala form descends from counting traditions shared across Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain lineages, the 108-bead count codified through continuous practice.
Available in 8 mm bead diameter, the bracelet is strung on durable elastic cord for everyday wear. Each obsidian bead is naturally cool to the touch, warming slowly with skin contact. The surface achieves a glassy polish that reveals the stone’s depth: not quite transparent, not quite opaque, shifting between charcoal and jet black under different light sources. Weight per bracelet sits between 20 and 30 grams depending on wrist circumference. A single guru bead marks the traditional count interval.
Mala bracelet in natural black obsidian (volcanic glass). Bead diameter: 8 mm. 108-bead traditional count with guru bead. Elastic cord. Origin: volcanic stone, China or Mexico. Handcrafted. Available from Artisan d’Asie.
