Description

The artisanal tiger’s eye Buddhist mala is a 108-bead counted strand in natural tiger’s eye stone, a solar amber-brown material shot through with chatoyance, the silken optical effect that shifts as each bead turns in natural light. It is built for daily meditation practice and long keeping.

This mala comprises 108 beads plus a guru bead, strung on silk cord with a traditional tassel finish. Bead diameters are available in 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm; the full necklace measures approximately 96 centimeters worn as a single strand, or 48 centimeters doubled as a wrist wrap. Each bead is polished smooth to a consistent sphere, with the chatoyant band running through the center. Total weight ranges from 45 to 90 grams depending on bead size. Handcrafted in Nepal.

Tiger’s eye mala beads are held in the left hand during seated meditation practice and moved one by one with the thumb and middle finger during mantra recitation or counted breath work. The warm amber color and the chatoyant movement of the stone are registered through touch as well as sight, grounding attention during extended practice. Worn as a necklace, the strand sits at or below the chest; doubled and worn as a bracelet, it wraps loosely around the wrist.

Tiger’s eye forms within metamorphic rock in South Africa and India, where silica fibers align under geological pressure into parallel bands that produce chatoyancy. The stone has been worked into counted beads across Himalayan and Tibetan bead-making traditions for centuries, moving along the trade routes connecting Indian craftsmen with Tibetan monasteries. The practice of counting 108 beads by hand traces directly to those early communities, where the count corresponds to sacred numbers recognized across Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions. Each bead in this mala is shaped and polished by Nepalese artisans working within that lineage.

What is the difference between the 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm sizes? The 6mm beads produce a lighter, more slender strand suited to wrist wear or those who prefer a delicate necklace; total weight approximately 45 grams. The 8mm is the standard mala bead size, suited to both necklace and meditation hand use; approximately 65 grams. The 10mm beads produce a heavier, more substantial strand best suited to seated meditation use or as a feature necklace; approximately 90 grams.
