Description

A zen buddhist monk statue in raw clay, each figure settled into a single absorbed moment: playing the guzheng, moving chess pieces, reading beneath an invisible lamp, or painting with unhurried attention. The texture is fine-grained and matte, warm to the touch.

Clay figurine making is among China’s oldest craft traditions, with roots in Han dynasty funerary arts and later refined in artisan villages of Jiangsu and Fujian. The monks here follow the Chan Buddhist monastic ideal: figures who find the absolute in ordinary activity, music, strategy, scripture, ink. Raw unglazed clay is the chosen material because it records the maker’s hand directly. Each piece is formed, textured, and kiln-fired individually, ensuring no two carry exactly the same surface character.

Each figurine stands approximately 10 centimetres tall and weighs between 180 and 250 grams depending on pose. The clay surface is left unglazed and lightly sanded, reading as stone from a distance and as warm earth in the hand. Detail is worked into the robes with a fine tool: fold lines, sleeve edges, the suggestion of fabric weight. The four poses are sold separately, allowing a single piece or a considered arrangement. A flat base keeps each figure stable on any surface.
