Maitreya, the future Buddha, evolved in Chinese iconography into the figure known as Budai, the wandering monk of the 10th century whose contentment became a devotional form across East and Southeast Asia. The laughing, rotund figure found in homes, restaurants, and temple entrances across China, Vietnam, and Japan is Budai’s image, absorbed into popular Buddhist practice and understood as an invitation to lightness. Boxwood, native to East Asia and prized for its exceptional density and fine grain, became the preferred medium for small devotional carvings across the Ming and Qing dynasties.

This statue is carved from solid boxwood, a hardwood so dense it sinks in water, allowing the carver to achieve fine surface detail without risk of splitting at thin points. The seated Maitreya measures approximately 8 to 12 cm in height, with the characteristic wide belly and hands open, either resting on the lap or held outward. The surface is finished to a smooth satin, allowing the pale yellow-gold color of boxwood to read without stain. Weight in hand is noticeably solid for the scale.
