Thangka painting is a continuous tradition of Tibetan and Nepalese Buddhist art, practiced without interruption for over a thousand years. Master painters train for years under lineage holders before touching the canvas. Manjushri, bodhisattva of wisdom, is rendered here in the precise iconometric proportions prescribed by classical texts: each gesture, color, and ornament refined across generations of transmission. Pigments ground from lapis lazuli, vermilion, and gold are bound in animal glue and applied layer by layer onto primed cotton cloth.

The scroll canvas measures approximately 50 by 70 centimeters, with a mounted length of roughly 85 centimeters including a silk brocade border in deep burgundy and gold. The cotton ground is hand-prepared with chalk and hide glue, a surface that holds fine line work at near-miniature scale. A wooden dowel weighted at the base allows the scroll to hang flat. The reverse carries the artist’s seal and a short inscription in Tibetan script, connecting each piece to a named hand.
