Description
This Amitabha Buddha statue is made from fine white ceramic fired at high temperature with a single-coat matte glaze. The result is a surface that is smooth to the touch but not reflective, giving the figure a quiet material presence without the cold appearance of high-gloss finishes. The white glaze is consistent across the figure, emphasizing form and proportion over surface decoration.
Amitabha is the Buddha of Infinite Light, central to the Mahayana Pure Land tradition and among the most widely venerated Buddhist figures across East and Southeast Asia. This statue depicts him in dhyana mudra, with both hands resting in the lap, palms facing upward and the right hand placed on the left. This is the meditative gesture associated with deep absorption, and it is the posture in which Amitabha is most frequently represented in Pure Land iconography.
The figure stands approximately 20cm tall and weighs around 450 grams, giving it a substantial feel despite its relatively modest size. The base is flat and unglazed, which provides a stable surface on any flat shelf or altar and creates a clear boundary between the figure and whatever it rests on. The unglazed base also exposes the clay body, showing the quality of the underlying material.
High-temperature firing produces ceramic that is dense and durable, with low porosity compared to low-fired earthenware. This means the piece is resistant to moisture absorption and less prone to surface marking over time. The matte glaze will not yellow or dull with age under normal display conditions, and the piece can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth if needed.
This statue suits a personal altar, a dedicated practice space, or any surface where a considered decorative object is appropriate. It works equally well as a standalone piece or within a larger arrangement. For those drawn to Pure Land Buddhism or to Amitabha specifically, it is a straightforward and well-made representation of one of the tradition’s central figures.
