Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future, holds a central place in Mahayana Buddhist cosmology as the next fully enlightened being to appear in the world. In Chinese popular religion, the rounded, laughing depiction of Maitreya diverged over centuries from earlier canonical representations, becoming widely associated with contentment and good fortune. This iconographic type, commonly referred to as the Laughing Buddha in Western contexts, has been reproduced in ceramic, wood, and bronze across East and Southeast Asia for hundreds of years.
This statue is cast and fired in ceramic, shaped to a smooth, durable surface. The figure depicts Maitreya in his familiar seated posture, with a broad smile, exposed belly, and hands open at his sides. The ceramic gives the piece a solid weight and a slightly cool surface to the touch. The glaze brings out the warmth of the rounded forms without excessive sheen.
