Description

The triple tiger eye natural stone mala necklace holds 108 beads across three geologically distinct varieties of tiger eye quartz: blue hawk’s eye, red iron-oxidized, and classic amber yellow. Each variety is individually polished to bring out its chatoyant band, the optical effect produced by the parallel fibre structure within the stone, making this mala both a functional counting tool and a piece of wearable mineral craft in the tradition of Buddhist workshop production from Nepal and Tibet.

The mala comprises 108 beads, each 6 mm in diameter, distributed across the three tiger eye varieties. Each bead is individually polished to reveal the chatoyant sheen, which shifts and deepens as the stone moves in light. The full strand measures approximately 50 cm, strung on a knotted cord with a guru bead and tassel at the closure. Approximate weight is 80 to 90 grams. Color variation across the three varieties creates a visible alternation along the strand. Natural stone varies in tone and patterning across individual beads; no two strands are optically identical. Depending on the batch available, color intensity can vary slightly from one order to the next. Our artisans match each strand as closely as possible with whatever stones the earth provides at that time.

Wear around the neck as a full mala at the traditional length of approximately 50 cm, or doubled at the wrist. The 108-bead count is standard in Buddhist and Vedic mala practice for mantra counting. The knotted cord construction is traditional and durable for daily use. To clean, wipe with a dry soft cloth; avoid prolonged water exposure which can weaken the cord over time. The tassel and guru bead mark the start and end of a full counting cycle.

Tiger eye forms through pseudomorphism, where crocidolite fibres are replaced by silica. The blue hawk’s eye variety retains traces of the original iron-blue fibre before oxidation is complete; as oxidation advances, the stone shifts to red; the fully oxidized form yields the amber yellow that has been a recurrent material in Buddhist mala production across Nepal, Tibet, and South India for centuries. This mala carries all three stages in a single strand, presenting the full mineral lineage of the stone.

A common buyer question: are the three stone varieties different in any way other than color? Yes, the color difference reflects different degrees of geological oxidation within the same quartz fibre structure. Blue hawk’s eye has the least oxidation and tends to show a cooler, silvery sheen. Red tiger eye carries iron oxides that shift the chatoyancy toward warmer tones. Yellow tiger eye is the fully oxidized form with the strongest classic gold band. All three are natural, the same mineral at different points in the same geological process.
