Black volcanic glass occupies a rare optical position, its polished surface neither fully reflective nor fully absorptive, holding light in a quality somewhere between the two.
The mala is among the oldest counting tools in contemplative tradition, originating in Hindu devotional practice before spreading across Buddhist lineages throughout Tibet, China, and Southeast Asia. The fixed count of 108 beads carries cosmological significance recorded in ancient Sanskrit texts, and remains observed without exception in pieces made for use in practice.
Each bead is formed from obsidian, a naturally occurring volcanic glass produced when silica-rich lava cools too rapidly at the earth’s surface for any crystalline structure to develop. The material is chemically consistent, allowing each 6mm bead to be polished to an even finish with the characteristic uniform black depth the stone is known for. The 108 beads are hand-strung with a guru bead placed at the junction point.
Each bead measures 6mm in diameter. The full strand contains 108 counting beads and one guru bead. The mala is sized to hang as a full-length necklace when worn. No case or additional accessories are included. Country of origin: China.
Obsidian is among the most recently formed geological materials used in mala production, created in volcanic events that may fall within recorded human history. The polished surface is consistent across beads, with minor optical variation natural to the material.
