Description

Standing boxwood Guanyin Bodhisattva, carved from dense pale wood, holds her posture with the quiet authority of a figure who has been still for centuries. The grain of the boxwood moves through robes that do not quite touch the ground.

Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, is among the most widely venerated figures in East and Southeast Asian Buddhist tradition, her image appearing across China, Vietnam, Korea, and Japan in forms ranging from the monumental to the intimate. The standing posture, often rendered with one hand raised in abhaya mudra and one lowered in varada mudra, draws on a lineage of Chinese temple carving refined over the Tang and Song dynasties. Boxwood carving for devotional figures became particularly refined in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, where the material’s fine grain allowed detail impossible in softer wood.

Carved from solid boxwood, this standing Guanyin reaches approximately 15 to 20 cm in height. The figure is rendered in flowing robes with surface detail at the folds and headdress, detail made possible by the fine grain of boxwood, which allows work at a scale impossible in softer materials. Finish is smooth and lightly sealed, preserving the pale yellow-gold color of the raw wood. The base is flat and stable. Weight is dense relative to size: this piece reads as more substantial than its dimensions suggest.
