Description

A seated boxwood Guanyin Bodhisattva rests in the room with a quality of settled presence. Carved from pale, dense wood, she occupies her pose as if she has always been there. The grain runs quietly through her robes.

Guanyin has been venerated across China, Vietnam, Japan, and Korea for over a thousand years, her image adapted by each culture while her essential quality of open, unconditional regard remained constant. This statue is hand-carved in China from Buxus sinica, Chinese boxwood, prized for its density, resistance to cracking, and fineness of grain. Boxwood carving as a distinct craft tradition emerged during the Tang dynasty and reached its height during the Ming period, when artisans developed the controlled chisel work visible in contemporary pieces.

The figure sits in a relaxed royal ease posture, one knee drawn up, with hands resting in the lap or holding a willow branch and vessel according to the variant. Carving is done in a single block where possible, avoiding joins that may open with humidity changes over time. Typical seated height is 15 to 25 centimeters. The surface is left in its natural state or treated with a thin wax or oil to deepen the grain without adding artificial color. Weight ranges from 150 to 350 grams depending on height.

Seated boxwood Guanyin Bodhisattva statue. Hand-carved Chinese boxwood (Buxus sinica), single-block construction where possible. Seated height approximately 15 to 25 cm. Natural or lightly waxed finish. Royal ease posture. Origin: China. Material: solid boxwood. Format: freestanding carved statue.

The stillest object anchors the room. A thousand-year lineage, held in wood. Artisan d’Asie sources from workshops that refuse mould-casting in favor of hand carving.
