Description
A standing Amitabha Buddha statue in boxwood arrives with a presence that demands nothing. The pale, dense grain of the wood settles the eye without effort. The figure stands open-handed, his pose unchanged across fifteen centuries of carving tradition.
Amitabha, the Buddha of boundless light, presides over the Western Pure Land in the Mahayana tradition and has been venerated across China, Japan, Korea, and Tibet for over fifteen hundred years. This statue is hand-carved in China, where boxwood carving has been a refined craft since the Tang dynasty. Chinese boxwood, Buxus sinica, grows slowly in mountainous regions, producing a wood of unusual density and fine, consistent grain that holds sharp detail and resists splitting over decades of display.
The figure stands in the abhaya pose, right hand raised with palm forward, left hand lowered or resting at the side. Every line of the robe and each fold of fabric is made by hand with fine chisels, without moulds. Typical height ranges from 20 to 30 centimeters depending on the variant. The surface is left unvarnished or treated with a light natural oil, preserving the warm ivory tone of the raw wood. Weight is substantial for its size, 200 to 400 grams, reflecting the density of mature boxwood.
