Description

The Copper Bodhisattva Guanyin Statue is a lost-wax cast copper alloy sculpture of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, produced by Newar artisans in Patan, Nepal. Available in four sizes ranging from 15 cm to 60 cm, it serves as a devotional focal point in a home altar, meditation space, or as a significant collector’s piece.

Cast using the ancient lost-wax method, the statue is made from a copper alloy that develops a rich oxidized finish applied by hand after casting. The surface shows the characteristic warmth of copper with darkened recesses that bring out fine iconographic detail — the graceful posture, the flowing robes, and the serene expression specific to the Guanyin tradition. The flat-cast base ensures stable placement on any flat surface. Weights range from approximately 0.8 kg for the 15 cm piece to 6 kg for the 60 cm version.

Place the statue at eye level or slightly elevated on an altar table, shelf, or dedicated stand. Newar statues are traditionally consecrated before use; a brief personal intention or offering at first placement is a common practice for those who observe Mahayana or folk Buddhist traditions. The oxidized copper surface requires no regular treatment beyond occasional dusting with a dry cloth.

Patan, in the Kathmandu Valley, has been the center of Newar metalwork for over a thousand years. Newar craftsmen developed the lost-wax repoussé and solid-cast techniques that spread Buddhist iconography across the Himalayan region, Tibet, and China. The Guanyin figure, originally the Indian Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, transformed in the Chinese and Himalayan traditions into a feminine embodiment of compassion and is among the most widely venerated figures in East and Central Asian Buddhism.

Which size is most suitable for a home altar? The 15 cm piece suits a personal desktop altar or small shelf niche, while the 30 cm size works well as a room’s central devotional object. The 60 cm statue is intended for a dedicated altar table or a larger interior space where its presence can be fully appreciated.
