Description
The Shakyamuni Buddha statue in brass with painted crown brings the seated figure of the historical Buddha into the room in solid cast metal, the painted crown marking the iconographic detail that distinguishes the Nepalese gilded-bronze tradition: royal origin, acknowledged in pigment at the apex of the figure.
Cast in solid brass using the lost-wax method, the statue stands approximately 18 centimeters tall on a lotus base approximately 10 centimeters wide and weighs approximately 800 grams. Surface detail includes fine line work in the robe folds and a hand-applied mineral paint crown in red and gold pigment. The lotus base is cast as a single piece with the figure, individual petals formed in relief around the perimeter. The brass surface deepens in tone over time without treatment, developing a warm patina through exposure to air and handling. Bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture with the right hand reaching to the ground, is rendered clearly at this scale.
A brass Shakyamuni statue of this size is well suited to a desk, altar shelf, or display cabinet. The weight provides stable footing without mechanical anchoring. At 18 centimeters, the figure reads clearly from across a room while remaining practical for a domestic surface. In traditional Nepalese and Tibetan household practice, the statue faces the main entrance of the room or the direction most frequently approached by residents.
Shakyamuni, the Sage of the Shakyas, was born Siddhartha Gautama in what is now southern Nepal, into the nobility of the Shakya warrior clan. His renunciation of the palace and his attainment under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya established the narrative at the center of the Buddhist tradition. In Himalayan iconography, the painted crown references his royal lineage, a detail emphasized in the Nepalese gilded-bronze tradition that has produced brass and bronze Buddhist figures in Patan and Bhaktapur for over eight centuries. The lost-wax casting method used here follows the same process those ateliers have applied since the medieval period.
Will the painted crown fade over time? The crown is finished with hand-applied mineral pigment, which is more durable than synthetic enamel. Under normal indoor conditions, it will not fade significantly. Avoid direct prolonged sunlight and do not use chemical cleaners on the pigmented area. The brass body can be polished with a soft dry cloth if desired.
