Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of compassion, is among the most widely venerated figures across East and Southeast Asian Buddhist and Taoist traditions. Originating in Mahayana Buddhism as Avalokitesvara, the figure was reinterpreted in Chinese devotional practice over centuries, taking on both male and female forms and accumulating a layered iconography of mercy and protection. Statues of Guanyin have been carved from wood for over a thousand years, black sandalwood among the most prized materials for its density, fine grain, and lasting natural scent.

This statue is hand-carved from black sandalwood, seated in a devotional pose, with surface detail shaped entirely by the carver’s tools. The natural coloring of the wood is left exposed, deepening over time with age and handling. The piece weighs approximately 800 to 1200 grams and stands 20 centimeters tall.
