Description

Premium Japanese matcha green tea arrives as a vivid, fine-milled powder, jade-colored and faintly sweet on the nose, carrying the mineral depth of a shaded field at first harvest. The moment it meets water, the bowl fills with color and a scent that belongs entirely to Kyoto.

Uji-shi, in Kyoto Prefecture, has cultivated tea continuously for more than eight centuries. The valley’s morning mists and mineral-rich soils produce leaves of unusual concentration. In the final weeks before harvest, the plants are covered under shade structures, a technique that deepens chlorophyll levels and raises the tea’s L-theanine content. The harvested leaves, tencha, are de-stemmed, de-veined, and stone-ground into powder. This is the method that defines ceremonial grade matcha, brought to Japan from Song Dynasty China and refined in Uji across centuries of continuous practice.

The powder is an indicator of quality before any tasting begins: color should be a saturated jade, not olive or gray, and texture should be impalpably fine, dissolving cleanly when whisked at 70 to 80 degrees Celsius. This matcha arrives in a light-sealed tin to protect freshness against moisture and air. The taste presents a clean initial sweetness, a sustained umami mid-palate, and a long smooth finish. Ceremonial grade is intended for bowl preparation, where the powder’s full character registers without dilution from milk or sweetener.
