Description
Premium Grade 4 raw oud wood sticks are unprocessed sections of natural Aquilaria heartwood harvested from the forests of Nha Trang, Vietnam, one of the most esteemed agarwood-producing regions in the world. Used as natural incense over a heat source or charcoal disc, they release the full aromatic complexity of genuine agarwood resin without any additives, binders, or artificial fragrance.
These sticks are natural, untreated Aquilaria wood in Grade 4, meaning mature timber with meaningful resin density. Each stick ranges from approximately 8 to 12 cm in length, with natural variation in shape and grain as found in all genuine agarwood. Visible resin pockets within the grain become darker and slightly tacky in warm conditions — a reliable indicator of authentic resin content. Available in formats of 5, 10, and 20 grams. No additives, no binding agents, no chemical treatment of any kind.
To use as incense, place one or two sticks on a charcoal disc or hold them over a heat source such as a candle warmer or incense heater at low temperature. Avoid direct flame, which burns the wood too quickly and produces a harsher smoke; low, sustained heat releases the resin gradually and produces a fuller, more complex fragrance. The sticks can also be broken into smaller pieces and infused in water heated to 80 degrees Celsius or above, using 3 to 5 pieces per 30 cl of water, producing a strong, distinctively flavored infusion used in traditional South and East Asian practice.
Agarwood, known as oud in Arabic and jin xian xiang in Chinese, forms inside Aquilaria trees as a defense response to fungal infection. The tree produces a dense, aromatic resin over years and decades to isolate the damaged tissue; the resulting infused heartwood is among the most prized aromatic materials in the world. The Nha Trang region of Vietnam has produced agarwood recognized for its quality for centuries, supplying trade routes from the Arabian Peninsula to Japan. Grade 4 represents a balance of genuine resin content and accessible pricing within a grading system where Grade 1 is the highest quality.
Can these sticks be burned directly like incense sticks? Not in the same way. Raw agarwood sticks do not have a burning agent added, so they will not sustain a flame or smoulder on their own. They require a heat source — a charcoal disc, electric incense heater, or candle warmer — to release the resin at a temperature that produces fragrant smoke. This indirect heating method also produces a cleaner, richer fragrance than direct burning.
