Description

The premium ceramic lotus flower incense holder is a hand-built Vietnamese ceramic piece designed for daily use with standard stick incense. The lotus form is wheel-thrown as a base and built petal by petal, each layer applied before the previous has fully dried, a method that produces the slight variation in petal angle visible in the finished piece. The dual-tone celadon glaze and high-fired body make this a durable object well suited to regular ritual or meditation practice.

The holder measures approximately 10 cm in diameter and 4 cm in height, with a central incense well 8 mm in diameter accommodating standard stick incense without adapter. The ceramic body is fired at high temperature, producing a dense, non-porous surface that resists heat marking and ash staining. Petals are glazed in a dual-tone finish: matte white at the base, transitioning to a translucent celadon at the tips. The base is unglazed and flat, stable on any surface. Weight is approximately 180 grams, giving the piece a presence that single-piece petal trays rarely achieve.

To use, insert a standard incense stick into the central well and allow the ash to fall onto the petal surface as it burns. The ceramic surface is non-porous and can be wiped clean with a dry or lightly damp cloth between uses. The 8 mm well accepts incense sticks of 3 mm diameter without filler. The piece is stable on flat surfaces and wide enough that ash from a burning stick falls within the petal boundary under ordinary conditions.

The lotus has been rendered in ceramic across East and Southeast Asian traditions for more than two thousand years, consistently associated with purity and the possibility of clarity in difficult conditions in Buddhist and Hindu iconography. This holder comes from ceramic artisans in Vietnam, where kiln techniques developed through centuries of exchange with Chinese potters produced a tradition of thin-walled, precisely fired work. The celadon glaze tradition in particular traces its lineage through Vietnamese workshop history directly to Song dynasty Chinese ceramic technique.

A common buyer question: does this holder work with incense cones as well as sticks? The central well is calibrated for stick incense at 8 mm diameter. Incense cones can be placed in the center of the petal arrangement on the flat surface between petals, but the holder is optimized for sticks. For cone incense, a flat ceramic tray or a dedicated cone burner is more practical.
