Description
The octagonal rosewood artisan storage box is a lidded container handcrafted from Dalbergia odorifera, the fragrant rosewood prized since the Ming dynasty for its exceptional density, tight interlocked grain, and natural pear scent. Eight equal faces in precise angles meet a tongue-and-groove lid with no hinges and no metal hardware, only wood meeting wood.
Dalbergia odorifera grows on the calcareous soils of southern China and Vietnam, with craftsmen selecting only trunks of more than eighty years to guarantee grain density. The wood reaches a density of approximately 0.95 g/cm3, producing a box that sits with satisfying weight on any surface. The outer surface carries slight texture from hand-sanding, while the interior is polished smooth. The deep reddish-brown tone darkens toward the grain intersections where oxidation accumulates. The natural pear scent, documented in Ming dynasty accounts, is faint, warm, and persistent, originating within the wood grain rather than any surface treatment. Approximate dimensions are 12 cm diameter by 8 cm height.
Use this box for jewelry, writing instruments, tea accessories, or small keepsakes. The tongue-and-groove lid seats precisely and lifts cleanly in one motion. Because there are no hinges, the lid can be set aside completely, which simplifies access. The smooth interior will not abrade soft materials. Keep the box away from sustained direct sunlight and humidity extremes, which can cause even dense tropical hardwoods to check at the grain intersections over time.
Dalbergia odorifera is listed under CITES Appendix II due to sustained demand and habitat loss, making each piece a document of the timber’s diminishing supply. The rosewood workshops of Suzhou and Guangzhou developed joinery techniques allowing this material to be worked without glue or metal fixings, a hallmark of quality that distinguishes hand-crafted pieces from lesser production. The octagonal form reflects a geometry found throughout Chinese cosmological and architectural thinking, where eight sides encode completeness and directional balance.
How do I care for a rosewood box? Wipe the surface occasionally with a dry or barely damp cloth. No oil or wax treatment is required under normal conditions: the natural resin in Dalbergia odorifera is its own preservative. Avoid prolonged water contact and temperature extremes. The pear scent is inherent to the wood and will gradually deepen, rather than fade, with years of gentle handling.
