Description
Luxury Chinese calligraphy begins before ink touches paper. This set assembles the Four Treasures of the Study as they have been gathered for more than two thousand years: the brush, the inkstick, the inkstone, and the writing surface, each made to a classical specification.
Chinese calligraphy is recognized as an intangible cultural heritage and stands as one of the foundational arts of Chinese civilization. The Four Treasures entered scholarly practice during the Han dynasty and have been gifted between poets, officials, and painters ever since, valued both for use and for the quality of the instruments themselves. The inkstone in particular carries a long tradition of connoisseurship in China: different stone types produce different qualities of ink, and a fine inkstone is kept for a lifetime. This set reflects that tradition in the selection of each component.
The set is presented in a fitted lacquered case, each instrument held in a formed recess. The calligraphy brush is bound at a classical proportion, hairs selected for their capacity to hold ink evenly and release it with a controlled stroke. The inkstone is carved from dark stone, its grinding surface smooth and slightly concave at the center. The inkstick is compressed ink in a traditional rectangular form. A sheet of xuan paper completes the set. The case is finished in deep gloss, suitable for display when not in use.
