In Balinese religious life, masks are not ornamental objects but vessels for spirits whose temperaments, ranks, and ceremonial functions are precisely codified within a long-established taxonomy. Some figures are invoked to ward off malign forces, others to bless, others to embody energies that the ritual calendar requires managing with care. Keliki miniature painting, developed by artists in the village of Keliki near Ubud and refined over four decades by that school’s painters, applies this theological knowledge to small-format work, producing visual records of the spiritual order that underlies Balinese ceremony.

This work is by Marjana, an artist working in the Keliki idiom who uses the miniature format to document spirit forms she knows from within the tradition. Fierce red figures with elaborated ceremonial features occupy the upper register; yellow and white faces of calmer bearing descend below. The arrangement is not compositional in the Western art sense — it is a diagram of hierarchy, made legible to anyone trained within that iconographic tradition.
