Bidadari — Original Keliki Miniature by Marjana

Two figures turn in opposite directions across a dark ground, their outstretched hands almost meeting at the center, gold catching light at each fingertip.

In Balinese cosmology, Bidadari are celestial nymphs associated with beauty, grace, and offerings carried to the gods. They appear in temple reliefs, in classical dance, and in the tradition of narrative painting that developed in the village of Keliki, near Ubud, during the mid-twentieth century. The Keliki school produced a distinctive miniature format: small in scale, dense in ornamental detail, and built on patient, layered technique.

Marjana works within that tradition. He begins each piece with precise ink line work laid down with a fine brush, builds color in successive washes of pigment, and applies prada-gold detailing to accent ornament and movement without overwhelming the composition. The two dancers here are set against a deep background, their scarves caught mid-drift, their hands held in mudra gestures that carry specific meaning within the vocabulary of Balinese ritual.

Marjana is a fifth-generation craftsman whose family history connects to the Pita Maha cooperative founded in the 1930s. His work is held in the collection of the LA County Museum of Art. This is an original piece; only one exists.
