Description
The malachite stone mala necklace carries one of the most immediate presences in natural mineral beadwork: deep swirling greens, no two beads alike, each surface banded with concentric patterns laid down over geological time in copper-rich rock. It is a counted strand for meditation practice and a significant piece of natural stone jewelry.
This mala comprises 108 beads plus a barrel-form guru bead, strung on knotted silk cord with a silk tassel at the finish. Each bead is cut from natural malachite and polished to a consistent sphere that exposes the full depth of the stone’s banding, the concentric rings in varying greens that form as copper-rich water moves slowly through limestone over centuries. Bead diameters are available in 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm. Full strand length is 96 centimeters worn as a single strand. Weight ranges from 90 to 180 grams depending on bead size. Handcrafted in Nepal.
A malachite mala of this length is worn as a single-strand necklace sitting below the chest, or held in the left hand during seated meditation practice. The weight and density of malachite make it particularly well suited to tactile use during counting: each bead registers distinctly as it passes through the fingers. The silk cord knotting between beads spaces them for accurate counting and prevents the full strand from unraveling in the event of a thread break.
Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral found in primary deposits in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, and Russia, with historic quarrying in Egypt and the Sinai going back to at least 4000 BCE. Its distinctive banding forms as copper-rich water moves slowly through limestone over centuries. Within Himalayan and Tibetan bead-making traditions, malachite’s density and permanent color made it a favored material for mala work and for sacred objects passed between teachers and students. Each bead in this necklace is shaped by hand by Nepalese artisans working within that tradition.
Will malachite fade or change color over time? Natural malachite does not fade. The deep green banding is structural, not a surface treatment, and remains unchanged with decades of wear. The polish may develop minor micro-scratches with extended daily use, which can be refreshed by a lapidary. Avoid immersing malachite in water for extended periods, as it is mildly soluble in acids; daily wear and occasional water exposure present no risk.
