Obsidian is volcanic glass formed when lava cools rapidly at the earth’s surface. The golden variety derives its characteristic shimmer from microscopic inclusions of magnetite or hematite, which refract light in warm copper and gold tones. Obsidian has been worked for at least ten thousand years, first as cutting tools and later as ritual objects across East and Central Asia. In Buddhist and Tibetan practice, obsidian has been used as protective talismans and prayer beads since the Tang dynasty, prized for its density and visual depth.
The necklace is strung on knotted silk cord, a traditional construction that spaces each bead and protects the stone from contact abrasion. Beads measure 10mm in diameter. A full mala strand holds 108 beads, the traditional count, and reaches approximately 90cm when laid flat. The finished piece weighs between 180 and 220 grams, a weight that sits with authority across the chest. Each bead is individually polished to a high gloss, revealing the golden shimmer in full. A guru bead and tassel mark the count strand close.
