Description
The Laughing Buddha Budai Maitreya statue in sandalwood is hand-carved from genuine sandalwood into a distinctive round form that extends the figure’s characteristic generosity into its very shape. The great belly, the cloth sack at his side, the open laugh: all are present, and all are resolved in warm, close-grained wood that carries a natural fragrance without any lacquer or applied finish.
This statue is carved from genuine sandalwood sourced from Africa, identifiable by its close grain and dark amber tone. The surface is hand-finished without lacquer, allowing the natural fragrance to remain active. The figure is fully rounded in form, measuring 8 x 8 x 8cm and weighing approximately 0.5kg. Robes fall open at the chest, the cloth sack rests at the figure’s side, and the expression carries complete satisfaction. The base is integrated into the carving. The wood deepens in tone with time and handling. Presented in a traditional Chinese-style gift box.
The figure suits placement on a shelf, entry console, desk, or altar. Its compact scale and integrated base mean it requires no stand or mounting. The sandalwood fragrance is subtle and does not require the figure to be placed near a vent or heat source to remain active. A soft dry cloth is sufficient for dusting. The wood will develop a slightly richer tone with regular handling, which is consistent with sandalwood’s natural behavior.
Budai, the wandering monk of tenth-century China who became the popular face of Maitreya, is among the most recognized figures in East Asian art. His image spread from Tang and Song temple carving into domestic craft, carried by merchants and pilgrims who understood him as a vessel of abundance. Sandalwood became the preferred material for his likeness in Fujian workshops: its warm, close grain and quiet fragrance gave the figure a sensory presence that lacquered wood cannot offer. Artisans season the wood before cutting to ensure lasting structural integrity.
Buyers frequently ask whether the sandalwood fragrance will last. Because this figure is left without lacquer or sealant, the natural aromatic oils remain accessible at the surface. The scent is most noticeable in the first months after carving. Over years, it becomes subtler but does not disappear entirely. Lightly sanding a small area with fine-grain paper, or storing the figure in an enclosed space for several days, will temporarily intensify the fragrance. The scent is intrinsic to the material, not applied.
