Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of compassion, is among the most widely venerated figures across East and Southeast Asian Buddhist and Taoist traditions. Originating in Mahayana Buddhism as Avalokitesvara, the figure was reinterpreted in Chinese devotional practice over centuries, taking on both male and female forms and accumulating a layered iconography of mercy and protection. Statues of Guanyin have been carved from wood for over a thousand years, with black sandalwood and padauk among the most prized materials for their density, fine grain, and lasting natural scent.
