Chinese lacquerwork of this kind traces to the workshops of Fujian and Guangdong, where successive resin layers, each cured before the next is applied, have been refined over centuries. The dragon and phoenix pairing is among the oldest motifs in Chinese applied arts, representing complementary forces: strength and grace, heaven and earth. In imperial contexts the pairing appeared on ceremonial objects reserved for the highest ranks. The motif migrated into domestic craft without losing its formal weight.

The box measures approximately 20 by 12 centimeters and sits with a low profile on a flat surface. The exterior is finished in lacquer over a wood form, with the dragon and phoenix carved in relief and highlighted in contrasting color against the deep ground. The interior is lined and holds sufficient depth for jewelry, letters, or small objects of value. The hinge is recessed and moves without resistance. The lid closes flush, with no gap at the seal.
