Description

The chinese silk bamboo fan is one of China’s oldest surviving objects of daily refinement. Held open, the silk panel catches light along every fold, and the precise tension of the bamboo ribs transmits directly through the hand.

The folding fan arrived in China from Japan during the Song dynasty and was rapidly adapted by Chinese craftsmen into a distinct art form. By the Ming dynasty, workshops in Hangzhou and Suzhou had developed the characteristic technique of mounting silk over split bamboo ribs, producing objects that were simultaneously practical and ceremonial. Court fans were carried by scholars and officials and collected as indicators of cultural standing. This lineage places the silk and bamboo fan at the intersection of daily life and cultural authority.

This fan is constructed from seventeen split bamboo ribs, each sanded and lacquered to a smooth finish. The silk panel is stretched tautly across the ribs, hand-painted with traditional motifs, and hemmed at the edges to prevent fraying. The fan opens to approximately 27cm at its widest span and measures 24cm from pivot to tip when closed. The pivot pin is secured with a hand-knotted silk cord tassel. The bamboo frame is lightweight, weighing approximately 45 grams, and balanced for a comfortable single-hand hold.

Material: pure silk panel stretched over split bamboo ribs. Rib count: 17. Open span: approximately 27cm. Closed length: approximately 24cm. Weight: approximately 45 grams. Surface: hand-painted silk with lacquered bamboo frame. Tassel: hand-knotted silk cord at pivot. Origin: China.

The fan opens and closes in one motion. It is a refined, functional object. Artisan d’Asie selects each piece for consistent quality.
