Description

A handcrafted silk and bamboo Chinese fan is a working object made from a silk panel stretched over sixteen split bamboo ribs, hand-stitched at the margins and available in multiple hand-painted motif variants. Originating in the artisan workshops of Suzhou and Hangzhou, it functions as a practical fan, a display object, or a gift carrying the weight of an unbroken Chinese craft tradition.

The fan is constructed from a silk panel hand-stitched to sixteen precision-cut bamboo ribs, tapered to a point at the pivot and broadened at the guard to resist splitting. The open span measures approximately 33 cm and the fan weighs under 80 grams. Motifs are applied in ink or mineral pigment depending on the variant selected: cherry blossom, crane, landscape, or classical calligraphy. The silk surface accepts hand-painted detail with a luminosity that paper or synthetic alternatives cannot match. The fan folds and opens cleanly, with the bamboo holding its memory across repeated use.

To use, hold the guard end of the fan in a closed grip and flick the wrist to open, allowing the ribs to fan outward in a single motion. Fan with gentle wrist movements from the elbow rather than full arm sweeps. When not in use, fold the fan along its natural ribs and store flat or in a fabric sleeve to protect the silk panel. Avoid humidity and direct sunlight, which can loosen the hand-stitching at the margins over time. The fan makes an effective and decorative cooling tool as well as a wall display piece when open and mounted.

The folding fan was perfected in the imperial workshops of Suzhou and Hangzhou, cities on the lower Yangtze River that became synonymous with silk production and luxury craft under the Song and Ming dynasties. Silk, chosen for its breathability and luminous surface quality, was dyed with mineral pigments and plant extracts. Bamboo, harvested at peak maturity and dried for months to remove moisture, provides the structural memory that allows a fan to open and close thousands of times without warping. The artisan tradition of hand-painted silk fans has continued in these workshops without interruption.

Can this fan be used outdoors? Yes, although direct sun exposure will fade the mineral pigment motifs over time and humidity can soften the bamboo ribs. For outdoor use, shade is preferable. For display purposes, mounting away from direct sunlight will preserve both the silk color and the bamboo’s structural integrity for many years.
