Description
The Chinese rosewood box in Zambian sandalwood is heavy in the hand, warm on the surface, and faintly fragrant without effort. This is a material that announces itself through grain, weight, and the quiet persistence of its scent: Zambian red sandalwood, Pterocarpus chrysothrix, grown in the Copperbelt and southern highlands of Zambia, where slow growth concentrates resins and pigments to a degree unmatched by faster-growing tropical species.
This box uses classic Chinese dovetail and mortise joinery, fitted by hand without adhesives or nails. The lid seats with a precise, cushioned fit, held by wood tolerances rather than hardware. Surfaces are hand-sanded through graduated grits and finished with beeswax, which deepens the grain without lacquering over it. The result rewards touch: smooth at the ridge, subtly textured in the open grain. Approximate dimensions are 20 by 12 by 8 centimetres, with a weight of approximately 600 grams. The wood’s natural fragrance persists for years without retreatment.
Use this box on a desk, dressing table, or shelf to store documents, jewelry, keepsakes, or objects that benefit from the fragrance of the wood itself. The lid closes completely without gaps; the fit is precise enough to make opening and closing a deliberate act. The beeswax finish can be renewed annually with a small amount of food-grade beeswax polish applied by hand.
Zambian red sandalwood has moved along Indian Ocean trade routes for centuries, reaching workshops in Fujian and Zhejiang where Chinese craftsmen applied the same joinery traditions reserved for huanghuali and zitan: the luxury hardwoods of the imperial court. This box inherits that tradition: a non-Chinese material worked in a Chinese form, the two traditions meeting in the joinery technique and the material’s natural authority.
Is Zambian sandalwood the same as Indian sandalwood? No. Zambian red sandalwood, Pterocarpus chrysothrix, is a leguminous hardwood distinct from both Indian white sandalwood (Santalum album) and African padauk. It shares a deep reddish-brown color and natural fragrance with Indian sandalwood but is denser, more dimensionally stable, and carries its scent in the wood’s resin rather than in a volatile oil, making the fragrance more persistent over time.
