Description

The ebony hand-carved Maitreya Buddha statue arrives as a complete object: dense, dark, finished by one carver’s patient hand over the course of days. The grain runs through the seated figure uninterrupted from base to crown, offering a continuity that no casting can replicate and that makes each piece irreducibly itself.

This statue stands approximately 20 cm tall. The density of ebony gives it a presence that larger statues in lighter wood cannot approach. The carving is executed entirely by hand, the face, the fall of the robe, and the precise angle of the hands in the Western chair posture each requiring separate attention. No two pieces share an identical grain pattern. The surface is finished with natural oil rather than lacquer, leaving the wood warm, slightly matte, and responsive to the touch. Weight runs between 400 and 600 grams depending on the specific block selected, each piece slightly different in grain and tone.

Place the Maitreya statue on a clean surface at eye level or above, in a room where it will be seen daily. Ebony does not require sealing and responds well to occasional light oiling with natural wood oil to maintain its surface depth. The statue is equally suited to a meditation space, a main living area, or a desk. The Western chair posture, feet on the ground, signals Maitreya’s orientation toward the present world rather than withdrawal from it.

Maitreya is the coming Buddha in Buddhist cosmology across Nepal, Tibet, and northern India, a figure of forward time rather than withdrawal. In the Himalayan tradition he is depicted in the Western chair posture: seated with feet on the ground, a stance that distinguishes him from the cross-legged meditation Buddhas and signals his intention of return to the world. Ebony, among the heaviest and most close-grained hardwoods, holds the carver’s line without softening and resists splitting over decades of handling, which is why it has been the material of choice for devotional carving of the highest order for centuries.

How do I care for a hand-carved ebony Buddha statue? Ebony requires no lacquer or surface treatment. Occasional light application of natural wood oil, such as tung oil or linseed oil, maintains the surface and deepens the natural dark tone of the wood. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can lighten the surface over years. Dust with a dry cloth. The natural oil finish means the wood responds to the touch over time, developing its own character with handling.
